Borough of Sanctuary

Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network

Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network are a local charity whose aims strongly resonate with us, so we approcahed them with the offer to produce a pro-bono film. Lewisham was the first official Borough of Sanctuary for refugees and migrants, meaning they have pledged to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for those seeking sanctuary. LRMN wanted a film to raise awareness of what this means in practice and encourage more local facilities to join their cause.

We wanted to put the voice of real people at the centre of our film, as well as make the film feel uniquely Lewisham. We begun by conducting interviews with LRMN's real clients to understand their perceptions of Lewisham and their experience of seeking sanctuary there. Their recollections become the basis of our spoken word poem, developed in collaboration with our scriptwriters and a Lewisham born spoken word poet, who performed the voiceover. Our visuals were also crafted around real places in Lewisham to anchor the film as bespoke to our viewer.

The films and social cutdowns have resonated with the local community, being shared widely by local partners as well as LRMN. The assets continue to be used to mark World Migrant Day as well as other milestones. We have also been contacted by other human rights charities who resonated with the authentic, raw storytelling demonstrated.
