What Words to Use

Understanding Patient Data

Understanding Patient Data helps the public demystify language around health data access and understand how their health data might be used if they opt in to share. UPD found that one particular area of confusion was Secure Data Environments. A research project with the public had given them a steer on what words to use to help demystify these, and UPD wanted to turn these into an animation.

Given the research's focus on 'What Words to Use' we decided to put words at the centre of our visual style having them appear on screen to shine a light on the research that had already been done. We further distilled their report into a clear, accessible script that would help capture the audience's attention in an often dry and confusing subject area.

The animation was shared back with the original research group who had a positive reaction and felt the film accurately reflected their thoughts. The animation has also been translated into six different languages to ensure that as many patients as possible understand why they would choose to share their health data.
